Basic
Powerboat Handling (P-101)
Goal:
To learn to act as Skipper and Crew of a single
or twin-engine vessel of 32-42 feet in length, cruising
in inland waters during daylight hours.
Ashore and Afloat Skills:
This course includes instruction in the structural,
mechanical, and electrical parts and systems of
the vessel, USCG required safety equipment, four
basic knots, basic chart reading and Rules of the
Road. Students will learn docking and handling techniques,
maneuvering the boat in close quarters, basic piloting
and understanding tides and currents, proper use
of the marine radio, basic anchoring techniques,
proper fueling procedures, proper action to take
when vessel is aground, and making the vessel "shipshape".
Prerequisite:
None
Inland
Powerboat Cruising (P-102)
Goal:
To learn to act as Skipper and Crew of a single
or twin-engine vessel of 32-50 feet in length operating
during daylight hours in inland or coastal waters.
Experience a liveaboard cruise of at least 48 hours.
Ashore and Afloat Skills:
This course builds on the basic boat
handling skills of P-101 and includes a live-aboard
cruise of three-days and two-nights. Students will
prepare and provision for the cruise, act as helmsmen,
spend at least one night at anchor (second night
optional at anchor or at a marina), learn proper
dinghy handling, nautical etiquette, and proper
piloting and seamanship skills.
Prerequisite:
P101 or equivalent boating experience
Combination
Handling and Cruising (P-101 and P-102)
Goal:
Same as P-102
Ashore And Afloat Skills:
This course combines the three-day Basic
Powerboat Handling Skills with the three-day Inland
Powerboat Cruising experience. Students will learn
and practice during the day and spend the first
three nights at our dock before departing on a three-day,
two-night cruise through the Intracoastal Waterway
and the barrier islands of Southwest Florida.
Prerequisite:
None
Note:
P-101 & P-102 include accommodations on board,
fuel, instructor and course materials. A Student
Guide will be mailed in advance to all students. Students are responsible for all
meals and for the instructor's meals when he is
on board.
Offshore
Powerboat Cruising (P-103)
Goal:
To learn to act as Skipper and Crew of a twin-engine
vessel of 36-50 feet in length operating day or
night in inland, coastal, and offshore waters. Experience
a liveaboard offshore cruise of seven days.
Ashore and Afloat Skills:
This course is designed to give coastal cruisers
some offshore cruising experience. Students will
plan, prepare and provision for a seven-day cruise
to the Florida Keys and return. The curriculum includes
maintaining ship's systems underway, offshore navigation,
electronic navigation, night passagemaking, a night
landfall, overnight anchoring, advanced marlinspike,
and more.
Prerequisite:
P102 or equivalent inland and coastal cruising experience
Note: P103 includes course materials, yacht, fuel,
instructor and one overnight dockage in Key West.
Students are responsible for all meals and for the
instructor's meals during cruise.
